Party Girl (First Look, 1995) Rated: R
Director:
Daisy von Scherler Mayer.
Screenplay: Sheila Gaffney, Harry Birckmayer, Daisy
von Scherler Mayer.
Cast: Parker Posey, Anthony DeSando, Live Schreiber,
Omar Townsend, Sasha von Scherler.
Storyline:
Bohemian free spirit Mary (Posey) is forced to work in
her godmother’s (von Scherler) library in order to pay her
back for bailing her out of jail. Trapped by her godmother’s
conditions, Mary is bored and confused by the library world. Her
transformation from wild party girl to dedicated library student
makes this eclectic film fun to watch.
Library
focus: At one point Marry confronts her Godmother and demands
“Do you think I’m too dumb to work in your fucking library?”
Once she starts working, she does tries to be helpful, referring
a patron who is looking for "oranges and peaches" to the
microfilm section. Actually, the patron wanted a copy of Darwin's
Origin of Species. Later a drunken Mary
sneaks into the library and starts reading the Dewey Decimal System
tables and her anal-retentive personality is transformed. One evening,
Mary and falafel vendor Mustafa (Townsend) make love in the stacks
and forget to close the windows to keep the rain out. In a powerful
speech, her godmother remarks on how Dewey hired women as librarians
because they couldn’t be expected to think too much. This
is a quirky film, but offers a realistic and extremely positive
image of librarians. Briefly continued as a TV series.
