Top Ten Films featuring Librarians
Compiled by Steven J. Schmidt

In the film Striptease, a police detective gets off to a bad start when he assumes that the stripper he is questioning is a hooker. When she starts off in a rage, he apologizes by saying “This isn’t exactly a library you’re working in.” Over the past century, hundreds of films, ranging from Music Man to Debbie Does Dallas have depicted librarians in their stories. Some of these depictions are accurate, some are not. Many of these films offer a negative image of our profession, but just as many show our strengths. They all just serve to remind us that sometimes we need to remember the way others see us, and laugh. Here are my top ten picks for the way librarians have been depicted in films:

10 UHF (1989)
9 Soylent Green (1973)
8 Music Man, The. (1962)
7 It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
6 Storm Center (1956)
5 Desk Set (1957)
4 Gun in Betty Lou’s Handbag, The (1992)
3 Party Girl (1995)
2 Salmonberries (1991)
1 Sophie’s Choice (1982)
